_Overcoming Stage Fright
_
For some, performing music in front of others can produce feelings of fear and anxiety, usually due to self-doubt or fear of rejection. Some jitters are normal but major stage fright can be debilitating and at the least can cause you to lose focus and concentration while performing. Here are some thoughts on stage fright and what you can do to overcome it.
Get Rid of Stage Fright
Think about the following things before your next performance.
* Music is about the emotion you convey through your instrument. Some of the greatest performances are not technically perfect. Don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself to be perfect.
* Remember when you first decided to play your instrument and how cool you though it would be
to be the musician playing on stage. Think about how far you've come musically from that day and that you are getting the chance to realize many people's dream.
* Don't make the performance about you. Get out of the way and make it about the music.
Think of what you do as giving to your audience. Some may not like what you have to give but that is to be expected. (I'm sure you can think of some bands or artists that you don't care for). Give a gift to people that may like your music.
PREPARATION AND PRACTICE
Practice the songs you'll be playing both with the band and by yourself. The more you practice the songs, the more confidence you'll have performing them. That goes for playing your instrument also. The more you practice your instrument, the more confidence you'll have playing it. Try recording your practices in some way. That will help you to objectively see or hear how you are doing.
Perform in front of people as often as you can. Invite friends over to your house and play for them or go to local open mic nights in the area. The more you do it, the easier it will become.
